Day Two

On the second day we met with Greg Dryden, the COO of HudBay. Mr. Dryden shared his professional journey of how he got started in the mining industry and the position that he is in. Our delegation learned a lot about the job opportunities in International Business. After that, we had a quick introduction to HudBay's operations. Mr. Dryden shared the challenges and opportunities of the mining industry. We had conversations about artificial intelligence, safety standards, supply chain and SUNAT. Something interesting we learned was how HudBay works with local communities to provide schools, training and to ensure economic independence for the long term. We learned so much at this meeting.  When our meeting with HudBay was finished we stopped for a quick coffee break at a local café.

After that we made our way to a meeting with the Canada-Peru Chamber of Commerce. We met with Maricielo Garay, the Trade and Education Commissioner and we had the opportunity to learn about their mission to promote and develop commercial, education and cultural relations. The Canada-Peru Chamber of Commerce has 220 members and was founded 25 years ago.  She shared with us that Peru’s main focus is mining, although they are currently trying to diversify. There is also a lot of illegal mining that is being done which harms the environment, creates conflict with the government, and encourages social uprisings. Ms. Garay also mentioned a number of initiatives and promotions that are aimed towards women who are pursuing STEM, such as the University of Engineering and Technology and Laboratoria. Lastly, the meeting finished with a question session where we were all able to ask Ms. Garay questions about our individual sector interests. Overall, the meeting with the Canada-Peru Chamber of Commerce was a highly valuable meeting and we learned a lot about the different sectors we are representing.
